No matter how cool the ps3 is I still find myself going back to my ps2 more often than not. It’s familiar and there are an incredible amount of games for it (and most of them are cheap now that the ps3 is out). I’ve been collecting ps2 games (new and used) for awhile now but the problem is that i’m not very good at taking care of them. I leave them out of the case, stack them in a pile, or throw them onto the coffee table when I’m done with them; just general foolishness that ends up costing me perfectly good games because they’re too scratched to use. Sounds familiar?
Don’t worry! There are a few ways to fix scratched PS2 games (and all your other discs) and by the end of this article you’ll be ready to go.
The Free Way
There are a lot of good suggestions on how to fix scratched PS2 games but there is really only one good option that works almost everytime (but has its consequences). Before you try this option you should first make sure that your disc isn’t just dirty. Sometimes scratches aren’t the problem.
Proper Cleaning Instructions – Run warm water over the disc to remove any dust and grime. If necessary, rub your finger over the disc in straight lines (from inside to the outside edge, not in circles). You can also use a light liquid soap or alcohol to get off the tougher dirty spots (Be careful where you put down your disc, avoid sticky spots in the future!).
The disc should be clean now, run it under warm water again and let it air dry. Once dry, try it again and if that didn’t fix the problem continue.
Fixing the scratch – Wet the disc lightly and then rub regular toothpaste (any brand with Baking Soda) onto the surface of the disc with a lint-free cloth (or eyeglasses cloth). Pass over the area with the scratch 10 – 15 times lightly (try not to make a “groove” by rubbing the same place over and over again, rub the surrounding area as well). Remember, do NOT rub in a circular motion, rub from the inside to the outside edge (otherwise you’ll REALLY damage the disc).
Run warm water over the disc again to remove the toothpaste, let it air dry before using it. This method usually takes out the majority of scratches but you should be careful when doing it by hand (you want to keep the buffer as even as possible and this is difficult by hand).
This is known as polishing and it works because it grinds down the surrounding plastic to make the scratch appear more shallow (and easier to read). It is not recommended that you do this often (manually) or you will eventually destroy the foil data layer underneath by creating a “groove” where you have over-polished (and then your discs are useless). No matter how careful you are, polishing by hand will always be uneven and eventually causes more damage.
Grinding away the plastic buffer manually will not work forever, you should look at finding a way to RE-Surface your discs evenly in order to preserve them. Keep them like new and you’ll be set.

The Best Way
Like I said, I have a lot of games (cds, dvd’s, and so on) and sitting down with some water and a tube of toothpaste isn’t really something I want to do anymore. As I mentioned earlier, fixing my discs this way only works for a little while before they become visibly uneven and absolutely useless. I don’t just want to temporarily fix my discs, I want them to be like New! How do I do that?
I put the Skip Doctor right beside my games.
This thing is awesome, it saves time and keeps my games in fantastic shape (much better than using toothpaste).
- Fix Scratched PS2 Games easily (as well as CD’s, DVD’s, and other games)
- Fixes scratches that can cause discs to skip, freeze, and fail to play
- Repairs both 3″ and 5″ discs
- Easy-to-use: spray, spin and shine
- Includes resurfacing fluid, drying cloth and felt buffing square
SkipDR makes repairing damaged discs easier than ever. When your CD, DVD, or game skips, it’s disruptive. The problem is, once a disc surface is scratched, it will prevent the disc player’s laser from reading the signal, which causes that irritating skipping. But the SkipDR has been saving discs for a decade now. The FlexiWheel microfrictional surface technology allows for gentle resurfacing of your disc and will restore it to its original playing quality.
Find a scratched Game, CD, or DVD? No Problem, fix it in less than a few minutes with Skip Doctor.
Important! If you have a lot of games and DVD’s like I do, then you’re going to be using the Skip Doctor a lot. Save yourself time and aggravation later and get your replacement Wheels today!
